De Pere's Grady Lenn, Preble's Jacob Nuthals turn in standout performances at Division 1 state cross country meet
WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Grady Lenn went stride-for-stride with the best high school runners in the state Saturday, and the De Pere sophomore proved again why he’s one of them.
Lenn was one of the stars during the WIAA Division 1 state cross-country meet at The Ridges Golf Course.
He finished third overall with a time of 15 minutes, 17 seconds, one year after his seventh-place finish was the second-best by any freshman in D1 this century.
Lenn was in a virtual tie for the lead after 2 miles before Onalaska junior Manny Putz (15:05.8) and Stevens Point senior Aloysius Franzen (15:09.7) pulled away toward the end of the race.
Putz won the individual state title for the second straight year, while Franzen was the key piece for a Stevens Point squad that captured the team championship by finishing more than 20 seconds faster than runner-up Hudson.
“Obviously, I wanted to win,” said Lenn, whose Redbirds team finished seventh out of 20 teams. “But there is absolutely no disappointment with third. My goal was to just leave it all out there, and that’s what I feel like I did. I mean, Manny and Aloysius are such great runners and competitors. Losing to them is definitely not upsetting at all.”
Lenn felt good at the start of the race, but he also felt he couldn’t quite get going fast enough to catch the duo. His plan was to make a move on the downhill, but his legs just didn’t cooperate.
It’s clear Lenn took another big step in his development in 2023 after finishing in 15:47.8 on this course in 2022.
